Pioneering wellness project to improve health of all residents in Barrow launched

The free two-hour session, which saw people learn the benefits of lowering stress and anxiety levels through healthy eating, as well as complementary therapies such as reiki, reflexology or yoga, was set to be held fortnightly.
"We hope it will now snowball through the community so that people pass on the skills they have learned so that eventually the whole town benefits and Barrow becomes the country's first wellness town."

Cross reflexes

Our first year students at Natural Health Science, in just their second lesson, had the oppurtunity to witness first hand the results of cross reflexes.
An athlete attended our student clinic with a request for a painfull surgically repaired ruptured right Achilles tendon.
A scratching technique was applied on the opposite left tendon for 5 minutes.
The eye catching result was that though the scratched area in general presented hyperemia, the exact area where the two ends were sewn together and presented pain for the athlete is were the hyperemia was most evident!
The athlete described a feeling of less pain also after the intervention.
The explanation for this is to be found in the spinal cord.

Eunice Ingham in her book Stories the feet can tell pg. 99 suggests the use of referral areas and the evolvement of this idea is cross reflexes.
The earliest documentation of this idea was by Aulus Cornelius Celsus (ca 25 BC—ca 50) in his book De Medicina.
"Much more often, however, some other part is to be rubbed than that which is the seat of the pain; and especially when we want to withdraw material (residues) from the head or trunk, and therefore rub the arms and legs."
"Finally, if particular limbs are rubbed, many strokes are required and forcible rubbing; both because the body cannot be as a whole quickly rendered weak through a part, and it is necessary that as much as possible of the diseased matter should be dispersed, whether our aim is to relieve the limb actually rubbed, or through it another limb."
