Smile stress away!

2013 too will be a stressfull year according to presidents and prime ministers. Physicians all agree that the impact of the world financial crisis (stress) on the wellbeing of the population will affect it negatively!
A recently published s
tudy* verifies something all people have known for ages now
"Grin and bear it: A surprisingly effective strategy to manage stress."
"According to the Facial Feedback Hypothesis, we not only smile because we’re happy but the actual activation of the muscles involved in smiling can have an impact on mood, making us happier. Our results confirmed this to be true as well, with smilers maintaining a positive mood throughout the stressful tasks better than the neutral group."

Interventions with Botox seem to have a similar positive effect also.**

Implications for the (facial) Reflexologist: When attending to a client where you subjectively conclude that there is present a negative emotional element, among the other benficial things you can do, go for the face!

The facial muscles involved in emotional expression are governed by nerves following a complex system of direct and indirect pathways to and from the motor cortex (voluntary smile circuit under conscious control) and the limbic system and brain stem (spontaneous smile circuit not under conscious control).
Smile muscles - Those are the muscles that run upwards from your lip to your eye.

While working on these mucles you can think through concepts like reflexology maps, meridians, zones etc. and thus interpret things accordingly to everyones benefit.
The muscles can be approached using the Hippocratic law on rubbing - feel first and then apply accordingly!

Bottom line smile, even if you have too, fake it, it really is contagious!

Cranio Sacral Reflexology

by Dr Martine Faure-Alderson originally published in issue 176 - November 2010

Over the next three to four years the concept of what is now referred to as Cranio Sacral Reflexology (CSR) was developed by the author, Dr. Faure-Alderson, as a distinct methodology combining Reflexology with Cranio-Sacral Therapy. Dr. Faure-Alderson came to link the two therapies when, during the course of treatment, she worked certain areas of the cranium and sacrum and then went on to work the ten zones of the feet. She discovered the points in the feet corresponded to the disturbances she felt in the cranium or sacrum. After 25 years of observation she documented her combination therapy.
The distinction between Cranio Sacral Therapy and CSR is that with the latter, one is accessing the CSF from a point in the foot or the hand rather than at various points on the body or the head. On the inner side of the foot and the hand we have an area for the spine where the spinal fluid, between the base of the skull on the point of Spheno Basilar Symphisis (SBS) and the sacrum and coccyx, is felt. The brain is above the distal phalange of the big toe. On the inner side of the distal phalange of the big toe is also where the occipital hole is found and where the atlas and axis are located. The 12 pairs of cranial nerves are on phalanges of each toe and finger on the right foot and 12 cranial nerves are in the same location on the left foot.

RiEN Newsletter December 2012

Letter from the Chair

Hello everyone

With the year drawing to a close that means that it’s time for membership update forms followed by invoices to be sent out! By now the RiEN representative for each of the member associations should have received an update form from Sally. I’d ask those concerned to complete the form and send it back by return so that the correct invoices can be sent out. The membership year runs from January to December.

The Board is for the first time putting into place various protocols and timetables to help make the day to day running of RiEN smoother than ever before! This will also help newly elected Board members when they take up their positions.

The two year term of Chair of RiEN comes to an end with AGM in 2013, no proposals have as yet been received for my replacement. RiEN will also be looking for an EFCAM representative as I’ll be stepping down from that too. I would recommend that the Chair and EFCAM representative positions are held by two different people.

In January the Board will be focussing on the AGM and the documents you’ll need for May. Have you booked your accommodation yet? I believe that there are still some rooms available at the Poseidon hotel.

Please do email me and give me any comments, ideas that you have about RiEN so that the Board can work on them.

Wishing you a lovely festive season and a happy New Year

Louise Vaughan-Arbuckle

The position of Chair of RiEN will once again become available. In accordance with the Constitution (8.4) all nominations must be giving in ariting to the Secretary, no later than five( 5) weeks prior to the date set for the AGM. Anyone interested in the position is welcome to contact Louise directly ( for further information. It is essential to have excellent English.

You’ll need to speak excellent English and be available to attend meetings (11am-5pm) in Brussels approximately 4 times a year. Outside of the meetings there’s email correspondence and the occasional skype meeting. For further information please contact Louise at

A collection of articles, photos and links relating to the CAM conference that took place in October will be available on the RiEN website shortly.

As requested by you - Arve has put the page for the Research Abstract Library onto the website. This is about sharing knowledge and can be an invaluable resource - It’s up to you now to make it work!

May 10th- 12th 2013

In 2011, the ASA investigated complaints about three websites advertising reflexology. The advertisers claimed or implied that many conditions could be alleviated by reflexology, including Parkinson’s disease, Arthritis, migraine, high blood pressure, fertility issues, cancer, Lupus, hypertension, prostate problems, depression, ME, Glandular Fever and ADHD. The ASA upheld the complaints because the evidence presented was insufficient to support the efficacy claims made on the website.
As well as being able to prove the efficacy of reflexology, practitioners who do not hold suitable qualifications are advised to avoid referring to conditions, the diagnosis of or treatment for which requires the supervision of a person with suitable healthcare qualifications (Rule 12.2). Moreover, marketers should not discourage consumers from seeking essential medical treatment. The ASA has ruled that by referring to ‘serious’ conditions, advertisers have discouraged consumers from seeking essential treatment and that the inclusion of a disclaimer explaining the limited role of reflexology is insufficient to address this concern. The Reflex Clinic website included a disclaimer that stated “reflexology is not intended to replace the relationship with your primary health care providers and the consultation is not intended as medical advice... It is not a substitute for medical care...”. Not only did the ASA consider the statement contradicted the overall impression that reflexology could treat the conditions listed, it considered readers could still be discouraged from seeking essential medical treatment (The Reflex Clinic, 26th October 2011)

Η επιστημονικη βαση της ενσυναισθησης με την συμμετοχη Ελληνα επιστημονα!

I have read in research papers, depicting the positive role of Reflexology as a complementary therapy, various reasons that lie behind this role. As with "anything", the elements of placebo, the recipients perception, his/her belief system and cultural backround are of the most common reasons noted. Of course a favourite of reviewing scientists is that Reflexologists (and CAM therapists in general) play a positive role because they spend one hour or more "listening" and paying attention to their clients thus putting them at ease. This of course was not considered scientific enough thus worth belittling as a component itself and that of CAM therapists, at least indirectly.

Well there is some just released news that puts some scientific weight, through a neurobiological point of view, behind the case for "empathizing with patients, getting to know them and trust."!

The research was conducted (again) by Michigan State University, yes, the University that recently published Gwen Wyatt's research paper on Reflexology. This time the researcher is of Greek heritage, Issidoros Sarinopoulos professor of radiology at MSU.

A note of caution!: I expect the future research on a larger scale to have the same and better results, but attention should be paid to those who will practise empathy towards their clients NOT to get too close! There is always the risk of opening your mirror neurons and possibly actually "feeling" your clients pain or leading yourself to Burnout syndrome (BOS). BOS is associated with stress has been documented in health care professionals in many specialties.
