Daugaard: Massage therapists shouldn't need licenses

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard said Thursday the state should take the Trump administration's advice and begin rolling back occupational licensure requirements, and the
best place to start is with massage therapists.

“I honestly am not worried about somebody rubbing my muscles so hard that they’ll injure me or that they’ll need a license to protect me from them,” Daugaard continued.

Cancer Research UK

A lot of interesting information here, from the country with over 10.000 reflexologists.
Interesting the AoR nor PR are mentioned on their list, could it be politics?
They mention 3 times "there is no evidence..."
There is no scientific evidence to support the use of reflexology as a treatment for cancer. Reflexologists believe that having your feet pressed and massaged in a systematic way stimulates the corresponding organs in your body.
At the moment there is little or no scientific evidence to prove that reflexology helps any of these conditions.
There is no scientific evidence to prove that reflexology can cure or prevent any type of disease, including cancer. But it is very popular among people with cancer.
It could be the attention of the therapist that helps people to feel relaxed, for instance, rather than the reflexology itself.
Finding a reflexologist
Reflexologists can join several associations, but there is no law that says they have to. Nor do they have to finish any specific training. Most reputable reflexologists are registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) or one of the organisations that are part of the Reflexology Forum.

Massage rules being tightened Kota Kinabalu: Both massage therapists and centres that offer such services will be better regulated with the impending tabling of the Traditional & Complementary Medicine Act (TCM). The Act, which is expected to be tabled by the Minister Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai in Parliament in June, would make it mandatory for: - All masseuses, masseurs and therapists, both foreign and local, must be registered with the Health Ministry's TCM Division; - Centres must specify whether the services they provide relate to beauty, reflexology or traditional treatment. Beauty and reflexology cannot be combined and provided as a service under one roof. Εδώ διαβάζουμε για ένα ξενώνα περίθαλψης - hospice στην Ιρλανδία. Our Lady’s Hospice was one of the first cancer care centres to set up a department for complementary and creative arts therapies, in 1998. “It started with one of the Sisters of Charity offering aromatherapy to patients. Then other therapists offered treatments on a voluntary basis. Now we have three paid complementary therapists who offer reflexology, aromatherapy and therapeutic massage,” says Scully. Scully believes that complementary therapies can help cancer patients get back in touch with their bodies and emotions. “Those on a cancer journey can be taken over by their disease, their medication and their treatment programme, and complementary therapies can help them become present to their bodies and accept where they are,” she says. Geraldine Clare is the chief executive officer of the ARC cancer support centres in Eccles Street and, more recently, in South Circular Road, Dublin. The centres offer complementary therapies such as therapeutic massage, reflexology and relaxation, yoga, tai chi and mindfulness meditation classes on a drop-in basis.

Ugandan Government Bans Reflexology Treatment‎

We read here, and here that the government of Uganda banned on Thursday March 24th all Reflexology Treatments in the country! All Reflexology centers closed and all Reflexology advertisements on TV, radio, newspapers halted!‎

It seems the situation had gotten out of hand with numerous non-qualified practitioners offering reflexology and promising cures for chronic diseases and at the same time charging a lot of money! There where reports that "Reflexologists" where giving blood tests and using stethoscopes. The picture on the right is of Goodrich Muteguya President of the Reflexologist Association of Uganda (URAU), also owner of Αlleluia Reflexology and Nutritional Centre, I love his suit, very convincing isn't it.

This is not something that has come out of the blue, there have been articles since October, read here and here , that where ringing alarm bells.

But who was listening or should have been, maybe the International Council of Reflexologists could have played a positive and beneficial role here, but what exactly is their role, I mean besides organizing (promotional) conferences! Ouch, sorry about that.

What is truly scary, considering the Reflexology BOOM over there - and Reflexology centers opening like mushrooms, advertisements etc. - is the possibility that they where actually doing a great job, thus causing "problems" to the Health Ministry.

Another thing of interest is how did Reflexology begin in Uganda? Read the story here. I am curious as to how the nurse - Betsy Keating who introduced our method to Uganda with her best intention feels about these developements?

The best oppurtunity for Reflexology legislation EVER!

Let's take the story from the beginning. We read here that the NYSRA

in an effort to seek legislation to be licensed and regulated separately from masseuses got senators Jim Alesi, John Bonacic and Marty Golden to sit with their shoes and socks off and get a Reflexology session - the reporter described it as a foot rub (sic). Golden had expressed displeasure with the reporters intent to post this photograph, it seems he has clairvoyant abilities as the follow up on this story proves. For non-Americans information, the senators who got Reflexology are Republican.

Now the follow up on the story goes like this: We read here, posted March 24 (3 days later) that the "Dems release anti-Golden-foot-massage video". The video is titled “Stand Up for New Yorkers,” which calls on Senator Marty Golden and his out-of-touch Republican colleagues to focus on the difficult decisions facing the state, not on having their toes rubbed."

Now first of all let me make clear that I am not in favor of Republicans nor Democrats I do not even vote in the USA!

Secondly I think that the way the Democrats handled this by using it in their favour is an excellent oppurtunity for the New York Reflexologists to do more Lobbying!
It is something like "Deus ex machina" latin for "god from the machine" in Greek "ἀπὸ μηχανῆς θεός," - apò mēkhanḗs theós, which is a plot device whereby a seemingly inextricable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object.

During the Democrats video we hear about something important everywhere in the world, New Yorkers jobs, but is this not the same exact reason why the NYRSA visited the republicans, about their jobs, their profession as Reflexologists? Maybe they should offer to give Reflexology to the Democrats too, since they too care about peoples jobs and at the same time support the Republican senators that are being hassled because they received it in the beginning.

My interest in this story is that in Greece and many other countries around the world, Reflexologists are having difficulties with legislation. The way associations like NYSRA handle this problem inspires and affects all of us.

Vote for Reflexology!

Golden's answer here
As for the massage, he said there was nothing wrong with taking 10 minutes out of his day to learn about reflexology, a stress-reduction technique that focuses on the pressure points of the body's extremities. Practioners are looking for the state to recognize and license them as a profession seperate from message therapists.

"Should we not get our blood pressure done when it's [at the Capitol], or our hearing checked, or kidneys?" he asked. "This is new and gives us an opportunity to see if should be licensed and approved," Golden said.
