Regional interdependence and reflexology

In the Orthopedic Reflexology approach, besides Eunice Ingham's expalnation on how Reflexology works (crystal formation/ circulation obstruction), we examine and study other possible mechanisms for the effect of reflexology.

One such possible mechanism might be what is known as regional interdependence, especially for persistent and chronic pain cases. These are the cases the vast majority of reflexologists face in their every day practise.

Simply put, regional interdependence is the concept that seemingly unrelated impairments in a remote anatomical region may contribute to, or be associated with, the patient’s primary complaint. Current research has shown that regional interdependence can be affected not only by other regions in the musculoskeletal system but impairements from varying body systems and regions. It is important to remember, that regional interdependence is different than referred pain.

With respect to reflexology, the ankle joint is a mobile joint and it correlates
Illustration property of Adam Thomas for Balacing touch
(reflexology) to the hip joint which again is a mobile joint. If the ankle joint from mobile becomes immobile then other joints will possibly be effected. The trained reflexologist will pick up this immobility (crystals, calcifications, nerve endings) and with skill and patience try to benefit this joint working out the "findings" and possibly correcting the mobility which in turn will have a positive effect on the hip joint.

If you would like a more simpler explanation, maybe these lyrics from The Skeleton Dance will help...

The foot bone’s connected to the leg bone.
The leg bone’s connected to the knee bone.
The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone.
Doin’ the skeleton dance.

This video is also helpfull, take notice that the description stops at the ankle joint, ...me wonders if the alteration between stable and mobile joints continues way down to the phalanges.

Harrogate leads UK with new cancer treatment school

The school which will be based at the Trust’s Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre, but also at Rudding Park, will deliver courses in complementary therapies.
He said “The reflexology treatments that Denise received from Julie allowed her to not only have a physical but also a mental break from dealing with cancer. “She came home usually exhausted but the next day, and several days after, having been able to sleep properly she was more her old self and a wife and mum not an ill lady with cancer. “Really it was the only time she was able to sleep properly and then eat proper portions and enjoy her food again.
During their royal visit to the Sir Robert Ogden Centre, Denise had the chance to tell Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall about the benefits of complementary therapy.

Experiences of breast cancer related lymphoedema and the use of reflexology for managing swelling: A qualitative study

Abstract

Background and purpose

An estimated 1 in 5 women surviving breast cancer will go on to develop breast cancer related lymphoedema (BCRL). There is a gap in the literature capturing experiences of people living with BCRL who use complementary therapies.

Materials and methods

Data were collected from 26 participants via a semi-structured interview. Questioning centred around their personal experiences of living with lymphoedema, and their use of reflexology lymphatic drainage.

Results

Four main themes emerged which comprised physical and psycho-social impacts of lymphoedema, experiences of physical change, and the return of optimism. RLD treatment was considered pleasant and non invasive, and the reduction in swelling helped with pain and mobility.

Conclusion

The main conclusion from this qualitative evaluation was that participants perceived benefit on physical and psychological levels. Participation in the study appeared to help re-engagement with normal life. Further research is needed to quantify the changes in these parameters.

Orthopedic Reflexology training in Athens Greece Summer 2018

For the 3rd time Orthopedic Reflexology training will be offered to international students in Greece. Our two previous venues were in Tolo/Argos Greece.

This year we are moving to Athens and taking the date venue to the end of summer... at least for most of you, because in Greece summer lasts long.

It is a great oppurtunity to combine a vacation in Greece with one of the most popular and successfull reflexology trainings offered at the moment.

The adress of the venue will be in the Nea Smirni area near the center of Athens. There are plenty of airbnb at great prices nearby. I can help you out with this also.

The dates of the course are 31st of August 1st & 2nd September 2018 between 9:30 am - 16:30pm.

This gives you more then enough time for sight seeing or enjoying the sea in Greece's capitol. During your 3 day course my full attention will be at you the participants so as to accomodate your visit and you get the most out of it! If you wish I will guide you personally in the afternoon and evening so to make sure you get the most from your visit to Athens.
A visit at the Acropolis museum along with a small sight seeing tour will be organized. In general for those who like, we will spend time together after the course and most likely with other Greek colleagues. (Admission fee's to museums and meals are at the participants expense.)

At this time of the year the sports teams will be getting ready for competition that will begin in September, it is most likely that we will have more then enough of them to practise on!

Orthopedic Reflexology Course Fee: 380euro/320euro*

*(Early Bird Course Fee until 10th July 2018 included as a gift will be the "cup of greed of Pythagoras", organic beeswax handmade by me and the OR training DVD!)

ORTHOPEDIC REFLEXOLOGY

Orthopedic Reflexology is about utilizing the experience one has obtained in discriminating the reflex areas or the condition of the foot's tissues and then applying the correct technique, the proper amount of pressure for the appropriate amount of time, to achieve the "medium" as taught by Hippocrates in order for nature to heal. Orthopedic Reflexology practitioners use the condition of the tissues of the feet as a guide. Anatomical charts to understand the reflexes, zones, meridians and fascia, as well as to effectively manipulate the feet.
Orthopedic Reflexology will teach the theory and practical approaches of Hippocrates and Galens guide on the effects of "rubbing" – Anatripsis; the four meridians of Hippocrates, Orthopedic reflexology maps, understanding pain and a deeper exploration of the history and origin of reflexology and the "science" behind it. In Orthopedic Reflexology we also learn how to assist many local foot problems such as halux valgus and hammer toes, which in turn affects and helps treat disorders of the myoskeletal system and the internal organs.
Orthopedic Reflexology is based on the teachings of Hippocrates, the father of western medicine. This regards the art of rubbing - Anatripsis. Hippocrates wrote small concise passages on rubbing which he considered easy to learn and apply. Scattered in the Hippocratic corpus many references to rubbing (and of the feet) can be found.
During this 3 day instructive course you will be taught the anatomy of the feet which will include the four muscle layers, connective tissue e.g plantar fascia and retinaculum, the location of the bones of the feet and the route of the tendons and peripheral nerves entering the feet. Participants will be taught how to effectively treat all these structures, and make correlations within their existing knowledge and integrate the new techniques into their own existing practice.
The basis of the training is learning the theoretical and practical approaches of Hippocrates and Galen on the effects of "rubbing" – Anatripsis, as they have been handed down to us from their original books. Hippocrates describes in detail four main “veins” that are considered the forefather of the Chinese meridians. The Hippocratic veins will be outlined theoretically in detail, and approached practically until the knee and elbow respectively.
During the course attention is given to understanding modern concepts of pain and the “science” behind Reflexology and utilizing this knowledge in our every day work. The history and origin of reflexology is reviewed.
Upon completion of training in Orthopedic Reflexology participants will have the capacity to alleviate complementary to standard care of local foot problems such as hallux valgus and hammer toes, which in turn reflexively affect and help treat disorders found in other parts of the body.
Please note - Orthopedic reflexology is open to all, not only reflexologists. Therapists who are new to working the feet will notice the differences, and body workers can integrate the techniques learnt immediately into their practice.
In short...
- if you ever wanted to specialize in the lower limbs (anatomy physiology),
- if you ever wondered why what you already do with Reflexology is helpful,
- if you wonder why you are NOT helping,
- if you ever wanted to be introduced to the sphere of Greek medicine
This course is for you!
The majority of the course is focused on the practical applications of the Orthopedic Reflexology techniques. There are many structures in our feet and each one requires a unique technique.

Orthopedic Reflexology 3 Day Course

• Hippocrates and Galens guide on the effects of "rubbing" Anatripsis
• Anatomy of the foot
• Hippocrates 4 pairs of Veins (meridians)
• Muscle chains/ Zones/ Chinese meridians/ Nerve pathways
• Orthopedic Reflexology Maps
• Hippocrates Holistic approach
• The 'science' behind reflexology
• Effective techniques for local foot problems such as hallux valgus and hammer toes
• Explain Pain-understanding the modern concepts
• Referenced Reflexology History - Why is this important for the outcome of your treatment and for our future as a profession?

Students will receive the Hippocrates corpus in digital form, the four Hippocratic meridians and many other resources which can be used for reference purposes and for personal marketing.

Broke Your Right Arm? Exercise Your Left. It May Help, Really.

If you sprain an ankle or break a wrist this summer and cannot use one of your limbs, the muscles there will weaken and shrink — unless you exercise those same muscles in your other limb.
According to a fascinating new study, working out the muscles on one side of our bodies can keep the muscles on the other side strong and fit, even if we do not move them at all. The finding has implications for injury recovery and also underscores how capable and confounding our bodies can be.

Medicine goes back to its roots at Istanbul congress

First Lady Emine Erdoğan, who is known for her personal support for traditional and complementary medicine, is the congress's honorary president.

In a keynote speech at the congress, First Lady Erdoğan said traditional and complementary medicine is not an alternative to modern medicine, rather, as its name imply, complementary.

"Medicine is as old as humanity but the problem is that modern medicine has severed its ties to the past and ignores this vast experience.

"The importance of the field has come back under the spotlight recently. Ignoring the tradition or belittling it is an outdated approach," she said, adding that the colonialist approach in the world "unfortunately saw the path to the future in ignoring the past of nations."

Prince Charles unveils plaque for Indian traditional medicine centre of excellence

"We will be providing, on the NHS, patients with yoga, with demonstrations and education on healthy eating, Ayurvedic diets, and massage including reflexology and Indian head massage. And all this will be subject to a research project led by Westminster University, to find out whether the English population will take to yoga and these sorts of treatments.
"Whether they will be helped by it and finally whether it will reduce the call on NHS resources leading to less GP consultations, hospital admissions and operations."

Reflexology, aromatherapy and palliative care

It is a very sad time when a loved one is nearing the end of their life and their journey on Earth is about to conclude. It is a difficult time to go through, and our lives are never the same once they are gone.
Reflexology and Aromatherapy can be used as a loving and effective treatment when a life is about to end.

“What level of regulation is needed?”

When I was Chair of RiEN I was in favor of the no regulation, when I was Chair in Greece I had the same opinion.
Two years ago I was saying the same when some Greeks had the idea of being regulated, ...fools!
Now read it here...
"But in the case of reflexology, horse massage or a farm labor contractor there isn’t a public safety concern. If someone is bad at performing these trades, their work will speak for itself and that person’s work opportunities will shrink until they are pushed out of the market."
Nowhere has regulation helped reflexologists.

Foot massage in some countries is associated with trafficking, this is a good example.
For those interested in the politics, this is a great example, especially because it gives the association strength.
In California, certification is voluntary, meaning it is not required by the state; however, according to CAMTC’s FAQs page, ” … many cities and counties have replaced their requirement for a city massage permit, usually issued by the police or sheriff’s “department, with a requirement for CAMTC certification.”

Back to school σεμινάρια από το NHS

Για αυτά τα άτομα σχεδιάσαμε σεμινάρια (Back to school!)

Etymology of Reflexology

Reflex-o-logy

I am sure you all know what reflex means.

In English names for fields of study, the suffix -logy is most frequently found preceded by the euphonic connective vowel o so that the word ends in -ology.

-logy is a suffix in the English language, used with words originally adapted from Ancient Greek ending in -λογία (-logia).
The suffix has the sense of "the character or deportment of one who speaks or treats of [a certain subject]", or more succinctly, "the study of [a certain subject]" for example "the study of reflexes.

So reflexology is "the study of reflexes".

Did ancient Greek physicians understand and study reflexes?
Hippocrates did!

"The body is a single unit and consists of identical parts, but without them having the same arrangement, both small and large, both those below and those above. And if one wants to take the smallest part of the body and cause harm to it, the whole body will feel this injury, whatever it is, and that's because the smallest part of the body has exactly what the largest has. This smaller part, whether it feels pleasurable or unpleasant, will pass it on to his or her relative part so the body feels pain and pleasure because of the smaller part, because in the smallest part there are all the parts, and they convey what they feel to their relative parts and announce everything."

On the Places in Man 1.
Hippocrates

Reflexology Top 10 for 2017

Looking back at 2017 one would say that it is not easy to conclude if 2017 was a good, average or bad year for Reflexology. Yes our method is continuing to be “on the rise” but at a steady pace this year.
In 2017 we read good publications in the media about it, Holland especially was a surprise this year. We noticed it being utilized more and more and even in new areas, there were also important additions in research which is always good.
2017 was definitely facial reflexology year, a lot of action in this direction.

Regarding training we noticed in many countries more and better of it but also “downsizing of training” in a few cases. Online training in Reflexology is expanding but this is happening generally in education, sign of the times I suppose.
Groupon deals almost disappeared, which we approve of, and we also noticed more and more professional Reflexologists around the world, China is definitely still leading the way. This year we read that a report exists about the foot massage market!
There has also been progression in the area of regulation, mostly from the USA but European countries are expected to pick up, hopefully in 2018.

Unfortunately 2017 shall also be remembered as the year “war on cam” began. I am not referring to articles written by scientists or skeptic journalists, these we have gotten used too, I am referring to government policies.

10. Footwear in general and medical footwear, gadjets and other devices, two luxurious cars included were all Reflexology orientated. This is a huge market and one is to question, "Do they believe what they say about the benefits of Reflexology or is it just a sales pitch"? They best footwear to take advantage of Reflexology our your bare feet, use them. They are more economical also.

9. Facial Reflexology got a lot of attention this year around the world. The amount of seminars and approaches, plus the publicity prove this. This is noticeable because after the feet, ear reflexology or hand reflexology for years were more popular. Not this year! It was to be expected, many good reflexologists have been working in this field for quite some years. I expect this field to expand even more. Well done.

8. Plato said that "Only the dead have seen the end of war". Not much has changed from his time, of the lucky ones who survive warfare, many returning home are now mentally challenged and go through posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) . The American army is determined to take care of it's soldiers and so are other motivated people. They will utilize CAM modalities if they have too, reflexology included...

7. Reflexology is off the bench and in the court!
It's been gaining popularity slowly but more and more by the year. In 2017 we were happily surprised by two examples of athletes, especially because they are high performance athletes. One is Polish voleyball player Anna Werblińska who got treated during the game with ear reflexology. And the other example is that of Hungarian handball player Laszlo Nagy, the latter receives very often and shares his satisfaction on social media regularly. This is one area where Reflexology has not yet established a solid presence, we expect to see more in the future.

6.  War on CAM...

Statistics state that CAM is used mostly in countries of one of two categories,  either countries with very bad economy-poor countries, or countries with booming economy, very good economy, rich countries! It would seem the latter is no longer true. There were very few countries (despite common belief) that offered CAM though their national health system, for Reflexology this was very rare, only a couple of examples existed and under very specific circumstances. These ruling goverments in 2017 decided to cease offering such service through their NHS and in Alberta they cut these services from private insurance also.
The image is worse for products of homeopathy and Bach remedies.
At the same time a opioid epidemic has exploded in the western world and it is costing a lot, a lot regarding goverment money and citizens quality of life. With communication and dialogue I am sure a solution can be found.
...maybe we should call in the army?

5.  Regarding research one stood out and it was not in Reflexology. In November a paper was published with some great findings leading to groundbreaking results. This research has to do with massage, but one of their findings, the groundbreaking result one, has to do with the approach Eunice Ingham, founder of reflexology called "referall areas" the evolvement of which would be the concept of cross reflexes.
The research was conducted at Coloroda State University and you must read their announcement here
Eunice Ingham was definetely ahead of her time, maybe one day researchers will find something groundbreaking to announce for reflexology?

4. Regarding Reflexology regulation it seems the picture around the Italy (2016).  It seems that the saying "what goes around, comes around is true. Because Reflexology and all other CAM have not proven through research to be of benefit nor have they any proven scientific basis, non medical therapists may practise them.
world is slowly clearing up. In the US the states of New York, Nebraska, North Carolina and Washington have proceeded in this direction, great news. In some EU countries there have been issues with other professions (physiotherapists and aestheticians) claiming that Reflexology should be practised only by them!

3. Reflexology training for the blind is growing all around the
world! In India exists a Blind football academy where The players will be given vocational skill training in computers and foot reflexology to ensure a parallel source of income when they are not engaged in matched, especially for those who do not end up successfully in pursuing football as a profession”.
The Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association offered a six-week reflexology training course for six blind and visually impaired women.
In Saudi Arabia  the goverment with private partnership are opening ten reflexology centers for the blind.
In Borneo the non-governmental organisation Sabah Society for the Blind is running a reflexology center as part of income-generating project.
Alexander Salon has many branches and has also joined hands with a blind school to train 15 blind people on reflexology and it will provide them employment in its own spa and also help them find jobs.

2. Congratulations to Hanne, well done, much respect!
Hanne Marquardt, reflexology pioneer was honored September in Berlin by invitation of German President Steinmeier. She was invited to attend an event in the Berlin Castle. This annual event is arranged once a year to honor German citizens for their accomplishments. Marquardt was honored for her 23 years of social work in Armenia where she had opened a school for Reflexotherapy of the Feet (RTF) in 1993. This was in response to times of great medical and ecological need after Armenia suffered a very heavy earthquake. In addition Hanne was also honored for her 8 years of voluntarily teaching in the then separated East Germany. She traveled to attend the party with Johanna ,her eldest granddaughter, and her 4-months old great granddaughter little Lillie.

Marquardt quoted in the article "I am happy to be here, but I do not care that much about me. It is important to me that this therapy (Reflexology) receives such a special recognition."

1. At No1 is the humble and not so glamorous story of Monica, a South Sudanese refugee who runs five massage and reflexology centres in Kakuma refugee campKakuma, Kenya's second-biggest camp located in the country's northeast near the border with South Sudan, is home to 154,947 refugees - the luckiest of whom may receive massages services alongside counselling sessions.
Besides taking care of them, she trains them also in these methods making the centre a empowering safe haven.
Monica and her colleagues try to help with emotional problems, stress and muscle tension due to stress. But even more importantly...

"It's all about self-worth.
To be tended like that shows them
they are worth being taken care of"

Have a great 2018 everyone!
