ORTHOPEDIC REFLEXOLOGY
Orthopedic Reflexology is about utilizing the experience one has obtained in discriminating the reflex areas or the condition of the foot's tissues and then applying the correct technique, the proper amount of pressure for the appropriate amount of time, to achieve the "medium" as taught by Hippocrates in order for nature to heal. Orthopedic Reflexology practitioners use the condition of the tissues of the feet as a guide. Anatomical charts to understand the reflexes, zones, meridians and fascia, as well as to effectively manipulate the feet.
Orthopedic Reflexology will teach the theory and practical approaches of Hippocrates and Galens guide on the effects of "rubbing" – Anatripsis; the four meridians of Hippocrates, Orthopedic reflexology maps, understanding pain and a deeper exploration of the history and origin of reflexology and the "science" behind it. In Orthopedic Reflexology we also learn how to assist many local foot problems such as halux valgus and hammer toes, which in turn affects and helps treat disorders of the myoskeletal system and the internal organs.
Orthopedic Reflexology is based on the teachings of Hippocrates, the father of western medicine. This regards the art of rubbing - Anatripsis. Hippocrates wrote small concise passages on rubbing which he considered easy to learn and apply. Scattered in the Hippocratic corpus many references to rubbing (and of the feet) can be found.
During this 3 day instructive course you will be taught the anatomy of the feet which will include the four muscle layers, connective tissue e.g plantar fascia and retinaculum, the location of the bones of the feet and the route of the tendons and peripheral nerves entering the feet. Participants will be taught how to effectively treat all these structures, and make correlations within their existing knowledge and integrate the new techniques into their own existing practice.
The basis of the training is learning the theoretical and practical approaches of Hippocrates and Galen on the effects of "rubbing" – Anatripsis, as they have been handed down to us from their original books. Hippocrates describes in detail four main “veins” that are considered the forefather of the Chinese meridians. The Hippocratic veins will be outlined theoretically in detail, and approached practically until the knee and elbow respectively.
During the course attention is given to understanding modern concepts of pain and the “science” behind Reflexology and utilizing this knowledge in our every day work. The history and origin of reflexology is reviewed.
During the course attention is given to understanding modern concepts of pain and the “science” behind Reflexology and utilizing this knowledge in our every day work. The history and origin of reflexology is reviewed.
Upon completion of training in Orthopedic Reflexology participants will have the capacity to alleviate complementary to standard care of local foot problems such as hallux valgus and hammer toes, which in turn reflexively affect and help treat disorders found in other parts of the body.
Please note - Orthopedic reflexology is open to all, not only reflexologists. Therapists who are new to working the feet will notice the differences, and body workers can integrate the techniques learnt immediately into their practice.
In short...
- if you ever wanted to specialize in the lower limbs (anatomy physiology),
- if you ever wondered why what you already do with Reflexology is helpful,
- if you wonder why you are NOT helping,
- if you ever wanted to be introduced to the sphere of Greek medicine

Today we look to the stars...

Its like uploading an app in your software, connecting the vestibular system to your feet again.
Researchers are looking into all these changes, but Canadian scientists might have some great information for reflexologists in the future to assist in balance control and those bedridden.
Come to think of it, it might be a good idea for space programs to recruit reflexologists to see if they can help astronaughts once back on earth to get on their feet again!

"The research team hypothesized that to make up for the lack of vestibular (inner-ear) information while in space, select skin receptors in the soles of astronauts' feet become increasingly sensitive in order to "re-weight" the sensory system.
The research team hopes that the study will identify the most critical receptors in the foot, which could then be targeted and re-activated among members of the aging population to offset sensitivity loss, which can lead to a loss in balance control and a greater number of falls."

Anthony Larkin passed away.

A big influence worldwide.
He was proud of having the biggest collection of reflexology books.
http://www.anthonylarkin.com/book-list/foreign-language-reflexology-books/
So sorry to not have met him in person.
R.I.P.
In the early hours of Wednesday 18 July 2018, the 199th day of the year, I lost my dad Anthony Larkin where he was in the intensive care unit in University Hospital Waterford. The above is a poem I read to him to send him comfortably on his way.
He carved his own niche in the world being one of the key players and trailblazers in reflexology and reiki in Ireland and cited in many reflexology books internationally, helping so many people with their health, and teaching so many more across the country. He was also a well regarded Chiropodist and chiropody was a love of his going back many years. He was technology mad and loved keeping in the know with the latest Nikon cameras and Apple gear.
He has been the best, thoughtful and understanding dad anyone could ask for. Daddy was a character, full of wit and ways with words. He was brazen and would say anything to anyone. His stories often seemed exaggerated but we're learning that the more the exaggerated they sounded the more true they actually were. Everyone has an Anthony story and if you have any to share we would love to hear them. Comment below (please note it's public) or message me privately.
He was renowned for his choices in food and a visionary when it came to trying to communicate what he wanted to restaurant staff. This included his mantra when requesting no garnish
"I want steak and chips, no slurry or silage, not even flowers on the plate."
RIP Anthony Larkin 'the foot man' 1945-2018. Far too young to go so quickly.

The rule of the artery is absolute....
osteopathy and osteopathic medicine.are very much in line with what Eunice Ingham proposed.
In 'Autobiography of Andrew T. Still', published in 1908, Still wrote...
“The rule of the artery is absolute, universal, and must be unobstructed or disease will result.”

They are exploring the world described by Eunice Ingham as "referrall areas".

"The measurements from these subjects showed that the connectivity between the cerebellum and the motor cortex changed not just for the areas of the motor cortex that controlled the right hand, but also in the areas known to control the right foot."

"I have a secret, my father is Steve Jobs."
During the last year or so of his life, she was there as his health faded. She’d given up on the possibility of some kind of “grand reconciliation,” but you get the sense from her writing that she still loved her father, in spite of everything.
Three months before he (Jobs) died and during one of her numerous visits to his death bed, the Brazilian Buddhist monk by his side possibly suggested the means of redemption.
The touching of the feet... was for both of you.
“It’s a good idea to touch his feet,” Rinpoche said, putting his hands around my father’s foot on the bed. “Like this.”

Hippocratic Anatripsis Massage Course Ireland/London
Hippocratic Anatripsis (rubbing – kneading) is a Two Day Massage Training Course following the principles as taught by Hippocrates and Galen. During this training practitioners will learn to work along the pathways of the four Hippocratic veins (meridians). Of these four main pathways, three of them travel along the myoskeletal system and one along the viscera. They are intertwined (connected and interconnected) not only amongst themselves, but also with the nervous system and have an effect on our thoughts, emotions and energy centres (as described by Plato in the dialogue Timaeus).
This training will focus on the practical hands on techniques, mostly with the recipient fully clothed or at times partially draped. Hippocrates and Galen describe many mediums to use with Anatripsis, all result with a unique effect. This will be discussed during the course. For the purpose of this two day training, and the comfort and ease of the participants, we will also learn how to be efficient utilizing the medium of cloth. In addition, part of the course will also include learning more on the nervous system and on the treatment of chronic and unresolved pain.
This training day is open to both reflexologists and massage therapists alike who wish to complement their existing skills. For those who have already trained in Orthopedic Reflexology the pre-existing knowledge and practical approaches taught will now be applied to the rest of the body. It is also suitable for those looking to expand their work in the area of sports, with the elderly, or in any target group that has an objective difficulty in undraping.
The techniques that will be taught have been utilized by Spiros successfully in his private practice, the Athens Classic Marathon, the Aretaieio Hospital pain clinic (Athens), and was considered the main factor for the successful outcome of the Diomidis Handball team (Argos-Greece) winning the Greek championship and the European Cup in 2011/12.

Regional interdependence and reflexology
In the Orthopedic Reflexology approach, besides Eunice Ingham's expalnation on how Reflexology works (crystal formation/ circulation obstruction), we examine and study other possible mechanisms for the effect of reflexology.
One such possible mechanism might be what is known as regional interdependence, especially for persistent and chronic pain cases. These are the cases the vast majority of reflexologists face in their every day practise.

With respect to reflexology, the ankle joint is a mobile joint and it correlates
![]() |

(reflexology) to the hip joint which again is a mobile joint. If the ankle joint from mobile becomes immobile then other joints will possibly be effected. The trained reflexologist will pick up this immobility (crystals, calcifications, nerve endings) and with skill and patience try to benefit this joint working out the "findings" and possibly correcting the mobility which in turn will have a positive effect on the hip joint.
If you would like a more simpler explanation, maybe these lyrics from The Skeleton Dance will help...
The foot bone’s connected to the leg bone.
The leg bone’s connected to the knee bone.
The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone.
Doin’ the skeleton dance.
This video is also helpfull, take notice that the description stops at the ankle joint, ...me wonders if the alteration between stable and mobile joints continues way down to the phalanges.
